Beyoncé Introduces New Whiskey Inspired by Her Texas Heritage
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, the renowned artist from Houston, has unveiled a new whiskey that celebrates her roots. The iconic singer has partnered with Moët Hennessy to introduce SirDavis, named after her paternal great-grandfather, Davis Hogue.
Davis Hogue was known as a farmer and moonshiner during Prohibition, cleverly concealing his whiskey bottles in the hollowed-out knots of cedar trees for friends and family to discover. Inspired by this family history and her appreciation for spirits, particularly Japanese whisky, Beyoncé decided to create her own unique expression. SirDavis “whisky”—notably dropping the “e” in whiskey to nod to its international influences—will be available globally in honor of Hogue’s legacy.
In her statement, Beyoncé expressed, “I’ve always been drawn to the power and confidence I feel when drinking quality whisky and wanted to invite more people to experience that feeling. When I discovered that my great-grandfather had been a moonshine man, it felt like my love for whisky was fated. SirDavis is a way for me to pay homage to him, uniting us through a new shared legacy.”
The whiskey was crafted with the help of award-winning master distiller Bill Lumsden, who carefully selected a mash bill comprising 51 percent rye and 49 percent malted barley. Techniques were employed to evoke the flavors of both Japanese and Scotch whiskies, while embracing the rich essence of traditional American rye. After maturing in sherry casks, the whiskey is finalized in Texas, where it’s blended and packaged in an elegant ribbed glass bottle, featuring a distinct black medallion adorned with a bronze horse.
Prior to its official debut, SirDavis made an impression in the spirits community by anonymously participating in spirits competitions, where it secured the title of Best in Class for American Whiskey from the 2023 SIP Awards and earned a gold medal from the New York International Spirits Competition.
With a price of $89 per bottle, SirDavis is now available for pre-order online. It will reach consumers through various retailers in the U.S., London, Paris, and Tokyo, as well as select airports in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco starting in September.
While this marks Beyoncé’s inaugural venture into the liquor industry, many celebrities have successfully established their own brands in the spirits market. Notable figures include supermodel Kendall Jenner, actors Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson and Matthew McConaughey, who have launched tequila brands, while actor Ryan Reynolds has invested in the gin market, and rapper Drake co-owns a whiskey label.
