Eco Wave Power, a prominent company in the field of wave energy, has received formal approval to initiate the installation of its innovative onshore wave energy technology in the United States. This approval represents a significant advancement in the country’s clean energy initiatives and is a pivotal moment for the company itself.
As reported by Electrek, Eco Wave Power has successfully acquired the final permit required to deploy its wave energy system from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This groundbreaking project will take place at the AltaSea Ocean Institute, located within the Port of Los Angeles, marking a pioneering venture in the realm of wave energy in the U.S.
With an energy conversion unit already delivered to the site, Eco Wave is now prepared to install the 100-kilowatt station. The recently obtained permit allows for the installation of eight wave energy floaters on sections of a concrete pier. The overall system will include this energy conversion unit, which comprises two 20-foot shipping containers. The final phase involves connecting this unit to the floaters, as outlined in an overview from Eco Wave.
According to Electrek, Eco Wave’s floaters are designed to harness the energy generated by the natural movement of ocean waves for electricity production. The company’s technology operates with automation that allows it to generate power even from wave heights as small as 1.6 feet. Notably, during severe weather events, the floaters are engineered to rise above the waves, maintaining safe operational levels until conditions improve.
Following the issuance of the final permit, Eco Wave is targeting to complete this unique wave energy project by early 2025. Shell, which entered into a partnership with Eco Wave in April 2024, will collaborate with the company during the implementation phase of this pioneering technology.
Inna Braverman, CEO of Eco Wave Power, expressed enthusiasm regarding this recent progress, noting in a statement that this project not only demonstrates a technological innovation but also signifies a vital contribution toward the global shift toward renewable energy. She acknowledged the support from partners such as AltaSea, the Port of Los Angeles, Shell MRE, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their efforts to integrate wave energy into the broader sustainable energy framework.

Although wave energy technology remains in its infancy, it possesses tremendous potential to generate substantial amounts of renewable power while providing a reliable source of electricity. As stated by Eco Wave, the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that wave energy could supply sufficient electricity to meet the needs of approximately 130 million households.
As the deployment and advancement of this technology continue, it is expected to play a role in reducing electricity costs and enhancing the diversity of renewable energy sources. Moreover, since wave energy systems do not emit pollution like traditional fossil fuel sources, harnessing this energy offers a pathway to a healthier planet and a more sustainable future.
