Controversial Pardons by Biden Spark Bipartisan Criticism
A former spokesperson for President Obama has joined a growing number of voices condemning President Biden’s recent pardons for family members, executed just prior to his departure from office. Tommy Vietor expressed his concerns during an appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime,” stating that such decisions send an unfavorable message both domestically and internationally.
“The power of presidential pardons is excessively broad,” Vietor remarked. “I believe Congress should consider a constitutional amendment to restrict this power, preventing self-pardons and pardons for family and staff.”
Last-Minute Pardons Just Before Trump’s Inauguration
As the nation geared up for the inauguration of Donald Trump, Biden granted pardons to his siblings moments before departing the White House. The individuals included in these pardons were James Biden, Sara Jones Biden, Valerie Biden Owens, John Owens, and Francis Biden. The president justified his actions by citing that his family might face “politically motivated investigations” following his exit from office.
In addition to his family pardons, Biden also issued a series of preemptive pardons on the same day, which encompassed notable figures such as Dr. Anthony Fauci and Gen. Mark Milley, as well as individuals linked to the House select committee’s investigation into the January 6 events.
Pardons Spark Debate Within Democratic Party
Biden’s end-of-term pardons, particularly the one concerning his son Hunter Biden, have elicited significant debate regarding the ramifications such decisions may have on his presidency. Vietor acknowledged the challenges facing the Democratic Party in the current political climate. “The Democratic Party is experiencing a difficult phase,” he noted. “We need a fresh wave of leadership and a clear message about our values and principles.”
Republicans Urged to Take Action
As the political landscape shifts with Trump back in power, Vietor advised Republican leaders to focus on concrete actions. “Now it’s time to either deliver on your promises or face the consequences,” he stated, emphasizing the need for accountability within the Republican ranks.
