Jim Parsons Shines on Broadway with Support from Kaley Cuoco
Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons is making waves again on the Broadway stage, and his former co-star Kaley Cuoco was there to show her support. On November 23, Cuoco took to Instagram Stories to share a moment with Parsons, revealing that she surprised him during one of his performances of Thornton Wilder’s classic play, Our Town, at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York City.
“Go see Jim Parsons in @ourtownbroadway!” Cuoco enthusiastically captioned the photo of their heartfelt embrace. “It is beyond.”
Parsons stars as the Stage Manager in Our Town, alongside notable actors such as Katie Holmes and Zoey Deutch. This production marks the play’s return to Broadway after a two-decade hiatus. The narrative revolves around everyday life in a small town, as the Stage Manager intricately weaves together the stories of its residents, including a childhood friendship that matures into marriage. The production, directed by Kenny Leon, emphasizes profound themes about existence and human connection.
Parsons has received critical acclaim for his portrayal, with Variety’s Aramide Tinubu praising him as “perfectly cast,” while The New York Times’ Jesse Green described him as “mercilessly acute.”
Green noted that Parsons’ combination of a light touch with sarcasm, along with his comedic timing developed from years of television work, makes him an ideal Stage Manager. This performance skillfully engages the audience, allowing them to experience the characters’ vulnerabilities deeply during poignant moments.
This Broadway stint follows Parsons’ Tony-nominated role in Mother Play, which ran earlier this year, showcasing his range as a performer.
While Parsons is widely recognized as Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, where Cuoco portrayed Penny Hofstadter, their connection goes beyond the show’s legacy. The CBS series was a cultural phenomenon, airing from 2007 to 2019 and securing its lead actors salaries upwards of $1 million per episode, plus significant backend profits, as reported by Forbes.
In a November 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Parsons expressed his fondness for Cuoco. “She’s a comforting presence, and it was a pleasure to work with her day in and day out,” he shared. “She’s a very warm person.”
Reflecting on his experience during The Big Bang Theory, Parsons stated, “I cannot overstate how impactful and positive it was for me. The feeling of thankfulness and gratitude in [my] heart for the whole thing, it’s almost overwhelming.”
