Big Freedia is blending the vibrant sounds of gospel with the energetic rhythms of bounce music. Recently, the New Orleans artist unveiled her new single “Take My Hand,” the first release from her much-anticipated gospel album.
In this track, she joyfully declares, “Tell the congregation/This is Freedia nation/Ain’t no room for hatin,” drawing from the powerful messages of gospel preacher Dr. CJ Johnson’s voice. The song unequivocally emphasizes celebration and community.
Freedia introduced the single at Stubb’s during the SXSW festival earlier this month, referring to her forthcoming project as a “gospel revival.” Backed by a gospel choir, she electrified the crowd with a performance described by Rolling Stone as “exuberant and joyful.” During her set, she shared her mission of uniting people, humorously noting her transition from using her appeal to “bring people together through the power of ass” to a higher calling of salvation.
The artist has previously mentioned her new direction as a return to her musical roots, recalling her days as a choir director in both high school and her local church in New Orleans. Additionally, she regularly participated in performances with the New Orleans Gospel Music Workshop of America.
