During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, comedian Bill Burr openly shared his candid feelings about Pearl Jam’s lead singer, Eddie Vedder, stating that he had once harbored a strong dislike for the band.

The conversation took an interesting turn when Meyers inquired if Burr had managed to reconcile with Vedder during the milestone event, SNL 50: The Anniversary Special. “It seems like there was a one-sided rivalry,” Meyers remarked, prompting Burr to reflect on the impact of Pearl Jam on his musical preferences.

Burr disclosed his emotional journey regarding music, admitting that Pearl Jam was a significant force that contributed to his realization that his youth was over. “I was deeply into hair metal and when Nirvana emerged, it disrupted everything I enjoyed,” he recalled. Burr mentioned that while many attributed the shift in music culture to Nirvana’s rise, he believed Pearl Jam played a vital role in that transition.

“When Pearl Jam hit the scene, it became clear that this was not just a passing phase. I understood then that grunge would dominate, and with it, many of my favorite bands faded away,” Burr explained. This sentiment led him to confront Vedder directly, humorously stating, “I told him, ‘I hated your band! You ended my era!’” To which Vedder responded with laughter. Burr noted that it took him two decades to come to grips with how much he appreciated Pearl Jam’s music, finally embracing their sound and recognizing their talent.

Now, Burr finds himself sharing a love for classic rock like AC/DC with his children. He also detailed his current role in the Broadway production of Glengarry Glen Ross, alongside prominent actors such as Kieran Culkin and Bob Odenkirk. Burr admitted to feeling some pressure leading up to his Broadway debut, often getting “amped up” before matinee performances.

Reflecting on his past experiences as a stand-up comedian, Burr recounted moments of disappointment when performing to small audiences. “In those days, I carried the energy of the room with me, thinking, ‘This is going to be a disappointment,’ and often, it was,” he noted. However, a piece of advice changed his outlook: “Why not make those few people wish they had brought more friends?” This encouragement shifted his perspective, promoting a more engaging approach to his performances.

In his downtime during the play’s intermissions, Burr enjoys an unexpected hobby—playing music on his electric drum kit, often jamming to AC/DC and Led Zeppelin as he awaits cues from his co-stars. “My percussion skills are definitely improving alongside my acting,” he joked, highlighting a unique way to blend his passions. Glengarry Glen Ross is currently being staged at the Palace Theatre on Broadway.
