Billie Holiday’s Former Townhouse Sold for $10.5 Million
The townhouse once inhabited by jazz icon Billie Holiday has recently sold for a remarkable $10.5 million, according to the New York Post. This property had previously changed hands in 2017 for $9.5 million, before being relisted in 2022 at a price of $13.9 million. The identity of the new owner remains undisclosed.
Holiday reportedly called this residence home for about four years, until her untimely death at 44 in 1959. At that time, the Renaissance Revival brownstone was subdivided into various apartments, with Holiday residing on the first floor. During her time in unit #1B, she produced her acclaimed album Lady in Satin in 1958.
This historic townhouse, constructed in the early 1900s, spans 6,300 square feet and is situated next to Central Park and the Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy Reservoir. The spacious 20-foot-wide residence has been meticulously renovated to combine modern living with historical charm, retaining original details such as moldings and vaulted ceilings. The brownstone boasts six floors and 14 rooms, including seven bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and two powder rooms, distinguished by wallpaper designed by celebrity Lenny Kravitz. Additional features include generous ceilings, a wine cellar, a screening room, six fireplaces, and a lovely backyard garden.
The listing for Holiday’s former home was managed by Kelly Killoren Bensimon of Douglas Elliman, a notable figure who gained fame on The Real Housewives of New York City and Million Dollar Listing. In 2022, Bensimon highlighted the expansive primary suite on the third floor, which measures 1,100 square feet, emphasizing its luxury. “It’s like staying in the best hotel suite you can imagine,” she expressed in a statement to AD, adding, “Every finish is top of the line.”
