Residents of the Oakridge community in southwest Calgary are being encouraged to remain vigilant as they enjoy the pleasant springtime weather.
This past Monday evening, a black bear was seen perched in a tree just a short distance from an off-leash dog park. The sighting occurred around 7:00 PM when local resident Connie Akbari drove along 90th Avenue.
“I glanced over and saw something big and dark in the tree,” Akbari recalled. “That’s when I realized it was a large black bear.”
While wildlife sightings in the area often include coyotes, deer, and bobcats, this was Akbari’s first encounter with a bear. “It’s a bit surprising. It shouldn’t be, but it is,” she commented. “Given our proximity to the Weaselhead Conservation area, it makes sense that he would be here.”
In response to this sighting, Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials have put up signs in the vicinity to inform residents and people using nearby trails or parks to maintain awareness of their surroundings.
Local resident June Tetz, who was out walking her dog, mentioned she carries bear spray that she initially purchased for coyote encounters. “I actually have my spray,” Tetz stated. Another resident, Shawn Darcy, learned about the bear through a community Facebook page, prompting him to keep his dog on a leash and choose an alternate park to avoid possible encounters.
Akbari expressed her appreciation for the spread of awareness regarding the bear. “It’s pretty critical for the neighbourhood to know about something like this,” she said. “It’s not about instilling fear but making sure everyone is aware of the potential for an encounter.”
For those who come across a bear or other potentially dangerous wildlife, Alberta Fish and Wildlife advises contacting them at 1-(800) 642-3800.
