The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have officially announced the signing of American linebacker Tony Jones to a two-year contract extension, solidifying his place on the team just months before he would have entered free agency in February.
Standing at six feet two inches and weighing 235 pounds, Jones joined the Blue Bombers earlier this year, signing with the team on June 9 after being released by the Edmonton Elks during training camp. He made his debut for Winnipeg in July, participating as a reserve defender in a game against Saskatchewan. Following that, he was promoted to a starting role, playing in 11 consecutive regular-season games, along with the Western Final and the Grey Cup.
Over the course of the season, Jones proved to be a vital asset for the team. He ranked third on the squad by accumulating 60 total tackles, which consisted of 49 defensive tackles and 11 special teams tackles. Additionally, he showcased his defensive skills with one interception, a forced fumble, and successful fumble return.
In his professional career, Jones has recorded a total of 116 tackles over 31 games played with both Edmonton and Winnipeg, demonstrating his consistency and effectiveness on the field. The Blue Bombers’ decision to extend his contract highlights their confidence in his abilities and potential contribution to the team’s future success.
