Blue Jays Reap Rewards in Spring Bunting Contest

TORONTO – In a unique twist to spring training, Blue Jays manager John Schneider found himself reaching into his pockets for a $1,000 wager during a team bunting contest. This event turned out to be a beneficial investment as the Jays secured a 5-3 victory against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Will Wagner’s successful bunt became a pivotal moment in the game, helping to drive a three-run second inning. Later, in a crucial eighth inning with the score tied at 3-3, George Springer contributed with a single. Wagner subsequently reached base again after pitcher Jose Ferrer mishandled another bunt attempt. Ernie Clement then advanced the runners with a well-executed sacrifice bunt.

After Davis Schneider, who was brought in to pinch-hit, struck out, Bo Bichette came through with a line drive single along the right-field line, bringing both runners home and giving the Jays the lead once more.

“We actually had a bunting competition, true story, in spring training,” Schneider said post-game. “We divided the players into teams, and the winning team received a $1,000 prize from me. They really put in the effort.”

Schneider explained that the bunting competition saw players split into two teams: Team Blue and Team Jays. The event involved a variety of bunting techniques including sacrifice bunts, bunting for base hits, and executing safety squeezes. First base coach Mark Budzinski added elements such as cones and hula hoops for added fun and competition.

“The routine can get monotonous when we ask players to practice bunting in the early days of spring training,” Schneider noted. “So Bud and I came up with this competition to inject some motivation into practice. The results have been positive so far.”

He highlighted Clement’s standout performance, noting his exceptional consistency during practice sessions. “Ernie really excelled due to the dedication he showed. Practicing early in the morning in Dunedin, Florida, is key, but it’s all about executing when it counts. His commitment to the skill has paid off,” Schneider remarked.

Adding to the importance of teamwork, Schneider expressed his belief in doing whatever is necessary to secure victories. “If bunting is what it takes to win a game, then it’s money well spent,” he concluded, acknowledging the role of bench coach Don Mattingly in organizing the contest.
