Bluesky encountered a significant outage on Thursday evening, with the disruptions lasting approximately one hour.
Users reported difficulties accessing their feeds on both desktop and mobile platforms. While the desktop browser displayed a perpetual loading circle, the mobile application allowed users to log in but failed to load the feed. This issue was not isolated, as colleagues from Verge faced similar problems. Fortunately, services appear to have returned to normal.
In a message posted at 6:55 PM ET on its status page, Bluesky acknowledged experiencing “major PDS networking problems” and indicated that an investigation into the outage was underway. By 7:38 PM ET, they provided an update, indicating that they had pinpointed a likely cause and were implementing a fix for the affected Bluesky PDS instances.
At 7:54 PM ET, Paul Frazee, the Chief Technology Officer of Bluesky, announced that systems were returning to operational status and that the team was still addressing residual issues. The Bluesky status page confirmed that all systems had resumed normal operations.
The platform has yet to comment on the situation further. This isn’t the first time Bluesky has faced technical challenges; in November, users experienced slow feeds and notification delays due to downtime from one of its internet service providers caused by a severed fiber cable. Notably, that incident coincided with what Bluesky described as its “highest traffic day ever.”
Updates, April 24th: According to Bluesky, a fix has been implemented, and the site has seemingly returned to normal operations.
