Scottish Businessman’s Body Discovered in Kenya: Investigation Underway

The remains of a murdered Scottish businessman were discovered in a sack by a cattle herder in Kenya, just days after he disappeared from his hotel during a work trip. Campbell Scott, 58, was reported missing after he failed to return to his lodgings in Nairobi.

Scott, hailing from Dunfermline in Fife, arrived in Nairobi’s upscale Westlands area on 15 February for a business conference. His last known sighting was the following night, where he was seen in the company of an unidentified man after leaving a local nightclub.

Authorities revealed that his body was located approximately 60 miles outside Nairobi, hidden in a forest in disturbing conditions—his hands and feet were restrained with rope.

In connection with the case, local police have detained two suspects—a taxi driver and a waiter from the nightclub—who may have had close contact with Scott shortly before his disappearance.

As a senior director at Fico, a credit scoring firm, Scott was in Kenya to engage with colleagues at the JW Marriott Hotel, where he was scheduled to prepare for an upcoming presentation.

Concerned colleagues reported his absence to the police when they were unable to reach him on 16 February. This prompted a formal search, which escalated when Interpol became involved in the investigation.

Authorities were alerted over the weekend when a cattle herder found a sack containing a body in the forest. Subsequent identification confirmed that the remains indeed belonged to Scott.

A post-mortem examination is anticipated to take place on Tuesday to ascertain the cause of death.

The circumstances surrounding Scott’s murder have left the local community in shock. Anne Soy, the BBC’s deputy Africa editor, expressed that this incident is particularly alarming given that the victim was a foreign national who had only recently arrived in Kenya.

In a segment on the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland, she remarked on the unusual nature of the case, particularly because Scott was engaged in what appeared to be legitimate business activities.

Soy noted the absence of theories regarding the motives behind the murder, emphasizing that Scott’s employer had requested restraint from public speculation on the matter.

Scott’s educational background includes attendance at Woodmill High School and Kirkcaldy Technical College, after which he held various positions before rising to his role at Fico in 2014. His contributions were significant in expanding the company’s presence in international markets.

In a statement confirming Scott’s passing, a spokesperson for Fico conveyed the immense sorrow felt among staff members. They highlighted Scott’s leadership role in their international division and his crucial efforts in nurturing partnerships around the globe. The firm expressed condolences to his friends and family while urging privacy during this difficult time.

The UK Foreign Office has also confirmed its engagement, stating: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Kenya and are in touch with local authorities.”
