Boeing 787 Dreamliner Aborts Takeoff at Melbourne Airport

An Etihad Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was forced to abort its takeoff from Melbourne Airport on Sunday due to technical difficulties, as confirmed by various reports.

The flight, designated EY461, was scheduled to travel from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi. It began its acceleration on the runway at approximately 7 p.m. but suddenly halted, bringing the aircraft to a safe stop.

According to a statement from Etihad Airways reported by UAE state-owned The National, “The flight crew decided to halt the take-off for technical reasons, the aircraft was safely brought to a stop on the runway and emergency services attended as a precaution.”

Witness accounts from passengers indicate that two tires burst as a result of the landing gear catching fire during this incident, as per information from the Sydney Morning Herald.

In response to the situation, a Melbourne Airport spokesperson disclosed that emergency personnel arrived promptly and deployed firefighting foam as a safety measure.

“All 289 passengers safely disembarked the aircraft and were bused to the terminal last evening,” the spokesperson confirmed, noting that the aircraft was subsequently towed away from the runway.

The runway was temporarily closed following the incident, with operations resuming only after comprehensive inspections were completed Monday morning.

Etihad Airways later communicated to airport officials that they were in the process of rebooking affected passengers on alternative flights.

The aircraft’s trajectory can be traced using data from FlightRadar24.com, which indicates that it reached speeds of about 170 miles per hour before stopping.

Boeing has been dealing with a series of challenges affecting their aircraft, including a recent incident in which a door detached from a Boeing 737 Max operated by Alaska Airlines. Investigators revealed that four key bolts were absent from the door plug of the aircraft, leading to a dangerous depressurization during the flight.

Additionally, Boeing has been investigating potential issues with incorrectly installed fasteners on its undelivered 787 Dreamliner planes, as disclosed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

In this context, Boeing, when approached for comment regarding the aborted takeoff, directed all inquiries to Etihad Airways.
