At the impressive age of 95, Betty Boop has made her highly anticipated debut on Broadway. This beloved cartoon character, originally introduced to the world in 1930, is now captivating audiences in a new theatrical format, with newcomer Jasmine Amy Rogers stepping into the spotlight as the titular character. The transformation of Boop into a musical theater figure has drawn considerable attention from critics, with largely favorable reviews emerging. Here are some insights:
Adam Feldman from Time Out New York described the musical as reminiscent of “an old-fashioned candy shop,” filled with engaging throwback songs and elaborate dance numbers. He commends the “delightful creativity and coordination” displayed in the scenic, lighting, and costume designs and singles out Rogers for making a “sensational Broadway debut,” acknowledging Erich Bergen as her charismatic adversary, who brings a “slickly funny” performance to the stage.
