‘Boop! The Musical’ Takes Broadway by Storm

At the impressive age of 95, Betty Boop has made her highly anticipated debut on Broadway. This beloved cartoon character, originally introduced to the world in 1930, is now captivating audiences in a new theatrical format, with newcomer Jasmine Amy Rogers stepping into the spotlight as the titular character. Boop! The Musical premiered at the Broadhurst Theatre on April 6.

Boop! features a creative book by Tony Award winner Bob Martin, who is joined by renowned director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who has received two Tony Awards and the Isabelle Stevenson Award. The musical showcases original music and lyrics by David Foster and Tony nominee Susan Birkenhead, performed by a talented ensemble of 25, including the noteworthy Faith Prince. In this production, Boop’s grandfather plays a pivotal role in catapulting the iconic character from her classic black-and-white setting into the vibrancy of contemporary New York City, where she navigates the complexities of her relationships both in the real world and her whimsical cartoon realm, which is struggling in her absence.

The transformation of Boop into a musical theater figure has drawn considerable attention from critics, with largely favorable reviews emerging. Here are some insights:

Adam Feldman from Time Out New York described the musical as reminiscent of “an old-fashioned candy shop,” filled with engaging throwback songs and elaborate dance numbers. He commends the “delightful creativity and coordination” displayed in the scenic, lighting, and costume designs and singles out Rogers for making a “sensational Broadway debut,” acknowledging Erich Bergen as her charismatic adversary, who brings a “slickly funny” performance to the stage.

Similarly, Pete Hempstead of Theatermania shared a glowing review, dubbing the production a “vibrant extravaganza” packed with nostalgic comedy, delightful songs, and lively choreography. He highlights the novelty of the score, energized tap routines, and outstanding performances, particularly praising Stephen DeRosa for his humorous portrayal of Boop’s grandfather and Bergen for his “impeccable comic timing.”

Even critics who expressed reservations about the show found merit in various aspects. Jesse Green of The New York Times characterized the production as “ludicrous” and a “merch grab,” yet acknowledged Rogers as an “immensely likable” protagonist who “sings fabulously” and appreciated the inventive dance sequences along with a score that “pops nicely.”

These promising reviews position Boop! as a strong contender for several categories at the upcoming Tony Awards. With the competition for new productions being particularly fierce this year, the musical is currently vying for a Best Musical nomination, ranking seventh in Gold Derby’s predictions.

Rogers, meanwhile, is gaining momentum in the race for Best Musical Actress, currently sitting in sixth place—just outside the top five nominees. With recent glowing reviews, she is certainly one to watch for a potential first-time Tony nomination.

Audience expectations are also high, with many anticipating nominations for Best Original Score and a win for Best Choreography.
