What you need to know

On October 23, Boox introduced three new ePaper devices: the Palma 2, the Note Air4 C, and a preview of the upcoming Note Max. The Palma 2 maintains its 6.13-inch E Ink Carta 1200 display but adds features like a fingerprint reader, Android 13 operating system, and enhanced NeoReader software. The Note Air4 C offers an upgraded color display aimed at providing a more immersive reading and writing experience, particularly for artists. Pre-orders for the Palma 2 start at $279, while the Note Air4 C is priced at $499.

Boox’s new devices cater to a growing audience of e-reader enthusiasts. The company announced these products through a press release, showcasing the Palma 2 as a compact device designed for a “mindful lifestyle.” It retains the 6.13-inch 300 PPI E Ink Carta 1200 display found in its 2023 predecessor.

Equipped with Boox Super Refresh technology, the Palma 2 promises enhanced speed, thanks to an upgraded octa-core CPU that facilitates multitasking. It runs on Android 13, pre-loaded with the Google Play Store, enabling users to access their favorite applications easily.

For an enriched reading experience, the Palma 2 comes with NeoReader, a native application that allows users to highlight text, add annotations, and even utilize translation features. Additionally, an AI assistant built into the device can help users create reading lists or clarify complex passages.

A notable upgrade in the Palma 2 is the integration of a fingerprint reader into the power button, enhancing user security. The device also includes a customizable “smart button” that can carry out different functions based on how it is pressed—short press, long press, or double tap. It is designed to streamline user interaction, making it straightforward to access features like screenshots or the AI assistant.

In terms of memory, the Palma 2 comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with the option to expand via a microSD card. Users can also enjoy a durable 3,950mAh battery with a USB-C charging port, providing resilience against minor spills and moisture.

The Palma 2 will be available in black and white, and interested buyers can pre-order the device for $279. Protective and stylish flip-fold cases are also available for purchase.

Next in line is the Boox Note Air4 C, which features an enhanced 10.3-inch color ePaper display, building on the capabilities of the Note Air3 C. The new device is designed for brighter backgrounds and improved contrast to enhance user comfort. Additionally, it boasts a faster refresh rate and improved response time for touch input and stylus interaction.

The design of the Note Air4 C remains close to that of its predecessor, with a slim profile of 5.8mm and a lightweight build of 420g, making it portable for creative tasks.

Targeting artists and creators, the Note Air4 C includes a variety of tools such as templates, brushes, layers, and the new “Smart Scribe” AI feature. Furthermore, it introduces a “Shape” tool to assist in the refinement of artistic projects, allowing for easy adjustments to design elements. Users can also annotate their artwork and connect their notes seamlessly.

The device’s improvements extend to its performance, showcasing a roughly 50% enhancement in CPU efficiency along with the application of BSR technology, which benefits its display’s refresh rate.

User experience is further elevated through preset appearance options that enhance readability. Like the Palma 2, the Note Air4 C is packed with multitasking features like a split-screen mode, where users can read and take notes simultaneously.

The tablet sports 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for ample file management, complemented by a 3,700mAh battery.

The Boox Note Air4 C is available for pre-order at $499 through the company’s website and at Amazon.

Finally, Boox has teased the upcoming Note Max, which will feature a sizable 13.3-inch Carta 1300 e-ink display designed for clarity and a sophisticated design. This larger device will include a free-form front light for enhanced legibility and features a 2.4GHz octa-core CPU, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. Although the launch date has yet to be announced, more information is expected to emerge soon.
