Daredevil Returns: New Season on Disney+
Fans of the acclaimed Netflix series Daredevil are in for an unexpected treat, as the beloved character is set to make a comeback in a new season titled Daredevil: Born Again, premiering on Disney+ in March. This revival comes after Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige reached out in 2020, reintegrating the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Charlie Cox, who reprises his role as Matt Murdock, expressed his excitement about returning to the character and the surprise of getting a second chance at a series: “I never thought it would be a TV show again. I just assumed that we’d done that, so maybe it would be something else. So I was shocked when they told me in 2022 that we were going to do a show, but I was also thrilled. It’s such a great medium for this character. There is so much story left to tell. So the more time we have to do that, the better!”
However, anticipation was not without concern. The show’s creative team pondered how Daredevil’s iconic dark and gritty tone would transition under Disney’s family-friendly brand. It creates a stark contrast, as Netflix has cultivated a more edgy environment reminiscent of the rebellious neighbor, while Disney typically emphasizes wholesome content.
Despite these apprehensions, it appears that the production team behind Daredevil: Born Again has retained significant creative liberties to maintain the show’s mature themes. Cox noted, “The thing that we kept talking about was, this show has had the success that it’s had and has appealed to a very specific demographic because it’s one of the few superhero shows that is so dark and sinister at times. Vincent and I both felt like if you lose that, you are at risk of losing the identity of our show. So we really pushed for the show to remain geared towards an older audience and not dumbed down to kind of capture a wider net of people. I think in some ways it’s even darker than a lot of the stuff we’ve done in the past.”
‘Daredevil’ and the Streaming Landscape
The original Daredevil series emerged at a time when Netflix was heavily investing in original content, resulting in a slew of Marvel shows, including Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and The Punisher. However, the increasing financial pressures on Netflix led to the cancellation of these series, including Daredevil, which left fans disheartened. Even with its critical acclaim and dedicated audience, the show faced challenges sustaining itself in an evolving streaming environment.
After a significant hiatus, fans will be pleased to know that Daredevil: Born Again is bringing back the original cast, including Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson. The series is scheduled to premiere on March 4, on Disney+, reviving interest in the franchise.
