Daredevil: Born Again Makes Initial MCU Connections

“Daredevil: Born Again” officially integrates various characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with the exception of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, who previously appeared in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “She-Hulk,” and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, featured in “Hawkeye” and “Echo.”

While the original Netflix series was technically part of the broader MCU, it largely remained isolated, focusing primarily on its own street-level heroes without making significant references to the wider universe. Up to this point, “Born Again” continued this trend, featuring minimal crossover elements aside from occasional nods to the MCU.

This changed dramatically in Episode 5, which presents connections that may leave viewers unfamiliar with other Marvel Disney+ shows somewhat puzzled.

In a notable moment, “Born Again” ties into the larger cinematic narrative through a fleeting view of the marquee for “Rogers: The Musical,” first introduced in “Hawkeye.” However, aside from characters originating from the earlier Netflix “Daredevil” series, the episode refrains from featuring major characters from the broader MCU.

The surprise character introduced in episode 5 may not be deemed a heavyweight but rather an unexpected choice that unexpectedly harmonizes the storylines. This character is Yusuf Khan, portrayed by Mohan Kapur.

In the latest installment of “Daredevil: Born Again,” streaming now on Disney+, Matt Murdock attempts to secure a loan for his law firm. His scheduled meeting with the bank manager goes awry as the manager is unavailable, leading him to the assistant manager, Yusuf.

During their conversation, Yusuf expresses pride in his daughter, Kamala Khan, who is widely recognized today as the superhero Ms. Marvel. However, Matt seems unfamiliar with Ms. Marvel.

For those who followed the “Ms. Marvel” series on Disney+ or watched “The Marvels”, Kamala Khan is a young mutant capable of manipulating energy—but she is not categorized within the X-Men. Her popularity is rooted in Jersey City, and hints at the end of “The Marvels” suggest she is seeking to form her own team. Yusuf’s mention of Kamala being in Los Angeles indicates that exciting developments may be on the horizon.

Should Matt ever find himself at the Khan’s dinner table, perhaps a richer understanding of Kamala’s adventures awaits him. Until then, “Daredevil: Born Again” has officially marked its inaugural crossover with the interconnected universe it inhabits.

“Daredevil: Born Again” is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
