[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episode 9, “Straight to Hell.”]
The conclusion of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again has left fans pondering numerous significant questions as they anticipate the second season. Dario Scardapane, the executive producer and series writer known for his work on The Punisher, has shared insights into these developments.
The finale, titled “Straight to Hell,” depicted Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) instating martial law in New York City. He imposed a curfew and initiated the formation of an Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF), plunging the city into darkness through a staged blackout. This diversion was orchestrated to divert attention from his and his wife Vanessa’s (Ayelet Zurer) criminal activities tied to his administration.
Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) found himself in a precarious situation but was aided by Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) at Karen Page’s (Deborah Ann Woll) request. The duo learned of Fisk’s intentions to transform Red Hook into a freeport as they attempted to uncover more about his corruption.
Meanwhile, Frank faced off against the AVTF, which attempted to recruit him. After refusing, he found himself imprisoned for his noncompliance. As Matt and Karen regrouped at Josie’s, they recognized the futility of their immediate attempts to confront Fisk and his allies.
Determined to re-emerge as Daredevil and combat Fisk’s malevolence, Matt and Karen contemplated amassing their own coalition to oppose the Kingpin. This has led to speculation regarding a potential reunion of the Defenders or the introduction of other street-level heroes into the narrative.
The finale features a blackout across New York City, orchestrated by Wilson Fisk. Could this also symbolize an onset of a darker chapter for the city and its citizens?
Dario Scardapane: Indeed, the blackout serves a dual purpose. Such events create anxiety among the populace, often necessitating intervention from city officials. The concept of a mayor manipulating this fear is intriguing. This season ends on a somber note, with the villain triumphant, which was indeed our intention. It signifies the darkest moment for New York, hinting that a dawn of change is approaching.
During a graphic scene where Wilson Fisk crushes Police Commissioner Gallo’s head, how did you balance practical effects with gore?
My preference leans toward practical effects, and our special effects team shares that sentiment. We aimed for authenticity, asking ourselves how much we could achieve on camera. While some aspects had enhancements, we maintained a commitment to realism, particularly in a show grounded in an analog world.
Can you share how you choreographed the fight scene between Matt and Frank in the apartment, especially as it transitions from camaraderie to conflict?
When we reintroduced these characters, we knew they would clash. Their differing philosophies on justice were central to our narrative. Our fantastic stunt team worked closely with us to delineate between Frank and Daredevil’s styles during the fight, ensuring each character’s unique perspective was reflected in the choreography.
At the end of the finale, Matt resolves to challenge Fisk’s authority. Will he seek the help of the Defenders?
There’s an interesting intersection between my perspective and the fans’. While I cannot provide all the answers, I can share that the story indicates a broader universe featuring characters yet to emerge. A full-scale Defenders reunion remains uncertain, but the potential for new alliances exists.
In Season 2, will Matt be able to maintain his dual role as a lawyer, or will he have to retreat into hiding?
You’ve hit upon a central theme for our story. The first season focused on Matt’s struggle to reconcile his dual identity as Daredevil, culminating in a significant moment of balance between his lives. With the stakes escalated and vigilantism now punishable by death, Season 2 is poised to explore themes of resistance.
With the introduction of numerous new characters this season, is there anyone you’re particularly eager to explore further in Season 2?
This season allowed us to establish two factions: the resistance and Fisk’s administration. Many characters have just begun to unfold their stories. For instance, Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini) finds himself in a troubling alliance with Fisk, while we also have journalists and former partners of Matt that will play crucial roles as we move forward.
Fans speculate that Foggy (Elden Henson) may not be truly dead, drawing from comic book lore. Is that a theory worth holding onto?
This is a complicated question. The comic book universe often has twists, and characters frequently experience significant arcs. What I can say is that the narrative will unfold in due time, and that will dictate what happens next.
After Bullseye’s attempted assassination on Fisk, should we expect him to be a significant threat or perhaps an ally?
This is intentionally left ambiguous. The finale ends with Bullseye in a precarious position, prompting the question of where allegiances will lie moving forward. His character has layers, and I believe we have compelling narratives ahead with him as well as other characters.
