Suits LA Welcomes Brian Baumgartner and Patton Oswalt as Guest Stars
Suits LA is set to feature two notable guest stars in its upcoming episode. The show will welcome Brian Baumgartner and Patton Oswalt, who will portray fictionalized versions of themselves in the March 9 episode titled “He Knew.” The storyline revolves around an unusual request made by Baumgartner’s character as Erica (Lex Scott Davis) and Leah (Alice Lee) navigate how to address this intriguing demand. Meanwhile, Ted (Stephen Amell) and Kevin (Troy Winbush) confront shocking revelations regarding Lester’s (Kevin Weisman) motives surrounding the death of his producing partner, and a past case involving Ted’s old friend Stuart (Josh McDermitt) resurfaces.
In an exclusive discussion, Baumgartner and Oswalt shared their thoughts on stepping into these exaggerated roles.
The Appeal of Playing Oneself
Patton Oswalt: Taking on an exaggerated, larger-than-life version of oneself is always an enjoyable experience. Having done this type of role previously, it allows for significant creative freedom. The essence of who you are is still there, but the nuances can be exaggerated, making it a thrilling challenge.
Brian Baumgartner: For me, the process felt natural, even as I aimed to amplify Patton’s persona in an entertaining way. [Both laugh]
Character Dynamics and Development
Baumgartner: The premise allows for liberties in speech and actions that may not typically be expressed in real life. It was crucial for me to ensure our characters resonated with The Office audience while still being true to my experiences. Aaron Korsh, the executive producer, was instrumental in ensuring fans would still appreciate the narrative, so I felt secure going in. Once on set, it felt seamless, as if we had rehearsed, thanks to the chemistry we developed.
Oswalt: Exactly, the entire experience felt effortless. Knowing the improvisational nature of The Office, I felt at ease and was excited about the collaborative energy on set.
Scripted vs. Improvised Moments
Oswalt: While we executed scripted lines initially, we also ventured off the script for some sequences, allowing for spontaneity and playful interactions. The ability to improvise added a layer of fun to the experience.
Baumgartner: There were moments where someone would offer me cues right before a take, which added to the challenge of keeping a straight face while anticipating their lines. It was a blast to work in that environment.
Unraveling the Characters’ Encounter
Oswalt: The interaction stems from real industry pressures, as my character represents an actor seeking deeper roles and consulting out of necessity for guidance from Brian’s character. Things quickly escalate, making the encounter less than amicable.
Perspectives on Erica
Baumgartner: My character’s opinion on Erica isn’t firmly established at first, but Lex’s performance is undeniably impressive. My character, represented by Ted, often finds himself preoccupied, making it interesting to see how partnerships develop throughout this episode.
Oswalt: I believe my character feels reassured with Erica at the helm, exhibiting a confidence that Brian’s character lacks. He’s more grounded in the situation, wanting Brian to find stability.
Future Appearances
Oswalt: Viewers will have to keep tuning in to see if either of us makes another appearance this season. That’s all I can say on the matter.
Baumgartner: I’ll defer to Patton on that one. [Both laugh]
What Lies Ahead for These Characters?
Baumgartner: There are unresolved dynamics introduced in this episode that provide avenues for future explorations, especially in terms of the evolving relationship between Patton’s and my characters. The potential for further development is promising.
