Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe Collaborate on New Albums
Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe have unveiled a dynamic partnership with the release of two upcoming albums, Luminal and Lateral, set to debut on June 6. These albums are being released through Verve and stem from a conversation they had during their first encounter at the 2022 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, titled “Art and Climate.” Their collaboration deepened during a recent exhibition in London, where they showcased their individual artistic works, leading to a series of recording sessions that commenced early last year.
As a preview of what’s to come, they have already released two tracks: “Suddenly” from Luminal and “Big Empty Country (Edit)” from Lateral. Each track is accompanied by a video, available for fans to watch now.
In an insightful statement, Eno and Wolfe expressed their philosophy on the emotional power of music, stating, “Music is about making feelings happen. Some of those feelings are familiar, while others may not be—or may be complex mixtures of several different feelings.” They highlighted the significance of language in shaping experiences of emotion, noting that many cultures possess unique words that capture feelings absent in English. “By giving a feeling a name, we make that feeling more likely to be felt, more tangible,” they continued, adding that art has the capacity to evoke new and profound emotions that may not have been previously experienced.
The duo provided examples of such emotions, including ilinx, which conveys a sense of playful excitement in French, mono no aware, a Japanese term for the appreciation of life’s fleeting nature, and ya’aburnee, an Arabic expression reflecting the feeling of not wanting to endure life without a loved one. Through their music, Eno and Wolfe aim to explore and evoke these rich and varied emotional landscapes, inviting listeners to experience and connect with them in unique ways.
