Chris Ingram Makes History with Dual Rally Championships
In a milestone achievement for motorsport, Chris Ingram has become the first rally driver to claim both the British and European Rally Championship titles, a feat he accomplished at the Cambrian Rally in Wales.
Following his European Championship victory in 2019, the 30-year-old Ingram secured the British title by narrowly defeating his closest competitor, William Creighton. The race unfolded as an intense contest, transforming into a decisive battle between the two drivers.
Throughout the event, Ingram demonstrated skill and precision, finishing a mere five seconds ahead of Creighton after the initial four stages of the rally. Creighton, a representative of the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy, kept the pressure on Ingram but couldn’t maintain pace as the race progressed. Ingram ultimately expanded his lead during the final two stages, solidifying his claim to victory in both the rally and the championship.
Reflecting on his success, Ingram expressed a sense of relief and accomplishment, stating that winning the British title capped an “amazing season.” He acknowledged the formidable competition posed by Creighton, noting, “Will has pushed so hard today and we have had to give it everything we had.” This victory came after a season filled with challenges, which he believes adds to the narrative of his journey in the sport.
With eyes set on a future in the World Rally Championship, Ingram’s dual championship titles position him as a formidable force in the motorsport realm. His triumph is not only a personal victory but also a remarkable chapter in the history of rallying.
