NEW YORK — Students at P.S. 28X in the Tremont neighborhood marked the beginning of Black History Month on Monday with an uplifting performance from the Lincoln University marching band.
The event, organized by the school staff in collaboration with Lincoln University, aimed to introduce students to the rich culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), motivating them to envision their future in higher education.
“Our goal is to inspire these kids to consider attending HBCUs, embrace our cultural heritage, and simply enjoy the experience,” shared Rasheia Davis, a sophomore with the marching band.
The lively performance captivated the students, who responded with enthusiastic cheers while enjoying the band’s dynamic song selections and choreography.
“While there are excellent universities right here in New York City, it’s essential for them to recognize that there are institutions specifically designed to support and celebrate their unique cultural backgrounds,” explained Tarina Cobb, the culture coordinator at P.S. 28X.
Even though college applications are still a few years away for these young students, the visit from the band left a memorable impact on many of them.
“It was so awesome! I loved how they danced and how happy everyone was,” expressed fifth grader Alanis, reflecting on the excitement of the day.
