Brooke Shields Relives Memorable Encounters with the Bush Family
From an early age, Brooke Shields has maintained connections with influential figures, notably fostering a relationship with the Bush family during the 1980s. This bond has led to both heartwarming and awkward moments, including a humorous incident involving former First Lady Barbara Bush.
Diving into this topic, Shields appeared as a guest host on an episode of Today with Jenna and Friends, where she recounted a particularly memorable experience. The 59-year-old actress discussed her initial encounters with the Bush family, specifically reminiscing about her time spent with Jenna Bush Hager’s grandparents, President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush.
“I met your grandparents in the ’80s. I was so young,” Shields recalled. “I was invited to the White House for Easterseals. I never had a grandfather, so since I was quite young, he would give me boy advice and say, ‘Okay, I like that one. I don’t like this one.’ It was a very sweet relationship that I needed to have and hadn’t had with anyone else,” she shared.
As Shields grew older and became a mother to two daughters, her relationship with the Bush family deepened. An invitation to the Bush family’s picturesque estate in Kennebunkport, Maine, opened the door to another unforgettable encounter. However, the visit quickly took an unexpected turn when disaster struck.
During her stay, Shields decided to sneak downstairs to work on a puzzle and grab a beer. Yet, as she did, she was confronted with an alarming scene: water was pouring into the living room from the ocean. “I sneak downstairs to do the puzzle, go get a beer, and as I get a beer, water is flooding into the living room from the ocean, from over the rocks,” she recounted.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Shields sprang into action, “shutting all the doors” and rushing to find towels to help soak up the water. In a state of panic, she sought out Barbara Bush, knocking on her bedroom door to convey the potential flooding. “I said, ‘I just want to let you know, excuse me! I just want to tell you, I think the house might have flooded, but I think I’ve got it,’” Shields explained. What she didn’t expect was Barbara’s inviting response to come inside, casually wearing her “dressing gown.”
In a humorous twist, Barbara turned to George and asked him to pose a question to Shields, prompting Shields to anticipate an inquiry that would typically arise in a formal setting. “Okay, ask her, ask her,” Barbara urged before George asked, “Well, who do you think did it?” Shields humorously replied, “I don’t know who did it, but it’s probably the person who you think least did it.” The three then spent time together watching episodes of SVU, which Shields later described as “a moment of my life that was so special.” Despite the fear of flooding, Barbara seemed unfazed, humorously assuring Shields, “Honey, she saved our house!” Shields modestly interjected, “Well, I wouldn’t go that far.”
This glimpse into Shields’ relationship with the Bush family highlights not only the camaraderie shared through years of mutual respect but also provides a testament to the shared humanity and humor that can emerge from surprising circumstances.
