BTS Member RM Shaves Head Following Promotion to Sergeant
BTS leader Kim Namjoon, known as RM, is currently serving in the military as part of South Korea’s mandatory service requirements. Since enlisting in December 2023, the 30-year-old artist has been fulfilling his duties alongside four other members of the globally renowned K-pop group.
On February 1, RM took a moment from his busy schedule to connect with fans through a heartfelt letter, marking the Lunar New Year, known as “Seollal.” In this message, he shared insights about his life in the military and expressed his disbelief about reaching the milestone of 30 years old.
In his letter, RM asked his fans how they celebrated the Lunar New Year and reflected on turning 32 in Korean age while humorously noting his struggle to accept he is now considered an “old uncle.” He extended New Year greetings, mentioning he had forgotten to send wishes at the start of 2025.
Excitingly, RM also announced his promotion to sergeant, calling himself Sergeant Kim and mentioning that other group members have likely achieved similar standings. He expressed joy at this advancement while reminiscing about his initial thoughts on his military service duration, as instructors often pointed out how distant 2025 seemed. Yet, RM remarked how swiftly time had passed, with his discharge date set for June 10.
As he looked back on 2024, he described it as “an extraordinary year,” filled with memorable experiences, whether positive or negative. He also touched on the upcoming discharges of fellow members Jin and J-Hope, expressing mixed feelings of jealousy and relief, concluding that he views civilian life as the most appealing.
In closing his thoughtful message, RM expressed a longing to share more when he returns to civilian life, hinting at personal reflections he hasn’t yet been able to convey. He assured fans of his well-being, mentioning his activities during service such as working out and pursuing interests like music and movies. He also revealed that he shaved his head to mark his promotion, sharing a photo taken prior to the haircut. Finally, RM added a warm note of care for his fans, asking them not to worry about him and expressing his love.
