Suga’s Thoughts on the Grammy Awards Spark Discussion
Suga, the prominent member of BTS, is currently fulfilling his military duties, a period that has not dimmed his characteristic honesty and wit. During an interview with the LA Times as part of his AgustD World Tour in 2023, he shared his unfiltered views on the Grammy Awards, dismissing them as “local.” This comment echoed sentiments previously expressed by renowned filmmaker Bong Joon Ho regarding the Oscars, reigniting discussions about the global relevance of such awards.
While BTS has garnered five Grammy nominations, their lack of wins has left many of their devoted fans, known as ARMYs, feeling frustrated with the ceremony. Suga’s comments during the interview resonated deeply with fans who appreciated his straightforwardness, particularly in light of the group’s mixed experiences with the prestigious awards.
Bong Joon Ho’s similar observation in 2020 highlighted the perceived Western bias of the Academy Awards, remarking on the absence of South Korean films in nominations. His use of the term “very local” encapsulated a sentiment that Suga also conveyed regarding the Grammys.
Reflecting on BTS’s past performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards, Suga recalled the rigorous preparation they undertook to deliver an electrifying rendition of their hit “Butter.” He described the process as chaotic, noting that injuries and quarantines affected their rehearsals but also created lasting memories. “We’re not going to do that kind of performance again for quite a while,” he remarked, underlining the intensity of the experience.
In terms of military service, BTS members Jin and J-Hope have recently completed their obligations and have returned to civilian life. Meanwhile, RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook are approximately 60% through their service, expected to finish by June of next year. Suga’s military release is set for July 2025, marking a significant point in the band’s timeline as they prepare for future endeavors together.
