Insights from a Former Captive of Jihadists in Burkina Faso

A Ghanaian man, referred to as James for anonymity, recently shared his harrowing experience of being abducted by jihadist militants in neighboring Burkina Faso. In an exclusive interview, he recounted the fear and uncertainty he faced in the militants’ desert camp, which provided a rare glimpse into the inner workings of these groups.

James, who was kidnapped in 2019, recalled his terrifying first day at the camp, where he witnessed a chaotic return of fighters from an operation, firing weapons into the air. “I thought that was the end. I was just sweating,” he said, reflecting on the overwhelming panic he felt as he was struck by the militants. His ordeal lasted about two weeks, during which time he was pressured to join their ranks.

The insurgents, part of Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM)—an affiliate of al-Qaeda—offered James a glimpse into their operations. They attempted to recruit him by showcasing an array of weapons and enticing him with the promise of power. “The commander showed me a sack with different firearms and suggested I might lead a battalion,” James explained. However, he insisted he had no experience with such weapons and ultimately pleaded for his release, citing his sick child back home.

James’s experience surfaced during a public awareness campaign spearheaded by Ghana’s National Commission on Civic Education, which aims to deter young people from joining extremist groups. Mawuli Agbenu, the commission’s regional director, noted the importance of harnessing James’s story to engage communities more effectively.

The Jihadist Landscape in West Africa

Historically recognized as a stable democracy, Ghana has so far been insulated from the widespread violence that has affected West African countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The militants engaged with James have been particularly active in northern Burkina Faso, and concerns are growing over their potential to spread southward toward Ghana’s borders.

Aid agencies report that over 15,000 individuals have fled to northern Ghana from Burkina Faso due to the ongoing conflict. The security situation remains precarious, as Ghanaian officials acknowledge that jihadists often regroup within Ghanaian territory, taking advantage of porous borders.

In a July report by the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, it was suggested that the absence of attacks in Ghana might be due to the jihadist group’s considerations regarding local dynamics and the military’s strength. James’s Captivity: A Closer Look

During his time in captivity, James described living in a desert camp with around 500 insurgents, most of whom were young men. The camp was structured with designated areas for commanders, fighters, and captured civilians. As he adapted to his surroundings, he observed the militants’ lifestyle, which included relaxed moments of camaraderie, such as listening to music—a stark contrast to the orthodox views of other jihadist factions that often shun such practices.

However, he also glimpsed the militants’ brutal reality. James learned they captured women during raids, subjecting them to horrific treatment and exploitation. “They trade the women they’ve captured… those who resist are gang-raped,” he lamented, recounting conversations where the jihadists expressed pride in their conquests.

Furthermore, he witnessed the disturbing indoctrination of children at the camp, where young boys were trained to use weapons, and he recounted instances of children being sent to conduct suicide bombings under the guise of being beggars. “They shared that they sacrifice their children as suicide bombers, and they get paid after every mission,” James stated, revealing the chilling depth of the militants’ operations.

The Path Forward for Ghana

In recent months, Ghana has intensified efforts to enhance security along its borders, establishing military outposts and surveillance systems. However, concerns remain about the effectiveness of these measures, particularly as neighboring countries align with new military allies, such as Russia.

James’s story underscores the need for a comprehensive strategy that addresses the underlying socio-economic issues contributing to radicalization, as security analysts argue that military solutions alone will not suffice. Ghana’s National Commission for Civic Education is actively promoting community awareness, urging residents to report suspicious activity and remain vigilant against the risks of jihadist recruitment.
