Pete Buttigieg Mulls Senate Bid Following Sen. Peters’ Retirement Announcement
Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is reportedly contemplating a run for the Senate seat in Michigan after Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) announced that he would not be seeking reelection in 2026.
In a conversation with The Detroit News, Buttigieg remarked that he is “very seriously focused” on this potential opportunity.
Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) expressed her belief that many are encouraging Buttigieg to enter the race, indicating his strong appeal within the party.
The political landscape is shifting as Peters’ announcement has opened the door for various candidates to consider their own aspirations for the Senate. Interest has already been shown by several prominent figures, including Representatives Haley Stevens and Hillary Scholten, former gubernatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed, Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, and State Senator Mallory McMorrow.
Stabenow anticipated a potentially competitive primary, suggesting that the field could be broad or narrow, but adding, “I think it will probably be a spirited primary,” as reflected in her comments to The Detroit News.
As Michigan gears up for what may become a significant battle for the Senate seat, all eyes will be on Buttigieg and the other potential candidates as they navigate this evolving political landscape.
