Caf Launches Inquiry into Internal Misconduct Allegations
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has initiated an investigation into serious allegations surrounding the conduct of its secretariat. The organization aims to address claims of violations related to its governance and auditing frameworks.
According to a recent statement released by Caf, an external investigation will be conducted by an international law firm or a recognized audit and professional services firm, highlighting the seriousness with which the organization views these allegations.
The findings from this investigation will be reported to Caf’s executive committee, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and accountability within the organization.
While Caf’s announcement did not explicitly name Veron Mosengo-Omba, the general secretary of the organization, he confirmed via social media that he is under scrutiny. In his statement on X, he expressed concern over a report that he claims lacks credible evidence, stating, “My efforts to turn around and regularize this institution, which has been disrespected at times, are being sabotaged by an out-of-the-blue report containing grievances without documented proof.”
Mosengo-Omba, who took office three years ago after a notable career at FIFA, expressed confidence that the independent investigation will reveal the inaccuracies and motives behind the allegations against him. He holds dual nationality from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Switzerland.
Caf president Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to integrity, declaring in a recent statement, “There is zero tolerance in Caf for corruption or breaching internal governance, audit, and transparency regulations or for violating Caf and Fifa statutes and regulations.”
Motsepe emphasized the establishment of an internal governance and compliance department dedicated to upholding the highest standards of ethics and transparency, stating, “This department brought the alleged breach of Caf’s internal audit and governance regulations to our attention.” He further indicated that decisive action would be undertaken should any misconduct be substantiated through the investigation.
