Fatal Stabbing in Downtown Calgary
A 21-year-old man has lost his life following a violent altercation outside Commonwealth Bar & Stage in downtown Calgary during the early hours of Saturday morning.
The Calgary Police Service responded to the incident at approximately 1:55 a.m., as confirmed by Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson from the homicide unit, who noted that the investigation is still in its early stages.
“The incident occurred as the night was winding down,” said Gregson. “There were numerous people present, and initial observations indicate that many bystanders recorded the events as they unfolded.”
Authorities reported that two individuals suffering from stab wounds were transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, one victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Foothills Hospital, despite extensive efforts to save him. A potential third victim later sought treatment at the same hospital for stab-related injuries.
Staff Sgt. Gregson provided a brief update on the conditions of the remaining victims, stating, “One individual is stable in the hospital, while another has already been discharged.”
A canine unit was deployed to pursue several individuals who fled the scene. Police currently have four suspects in custody, and Gregson reassured that they do not suspect gang involvement in the incident. “There is no indication that this was a targeted attack or that gangs were involved,” he clarified. “This appears to be a tragic incident driven by alcohol and interpersonal conflict.”
While details remain limited as the investigation continues, Gregson highlighted the thorough nature of the inquiry. “Our investigators need to speak with all officers present, a process that is quite time-intensive. They will also review video footage and gather statements from all involved,” he explained.
Calgary Police are urging anyone with information or relevant video footage to reach out to them or contact Crime Stoppers.
