Cam Newton Reflects on Family Dynamics and Accountability
In a candid discussion on the Season 3 finale of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, former NFL quarterback Cam Newton shared insights into his family life, highlighting the complexities of his relationships with his children, particularly his oldest daughter, Shakira. Newton’s revelations stemmed from personal experiences related to his past infidelities and their impact on his family dynamics.
Newton, who is not Shakira’s biological father but played a significant role in her upbringing during his relationship with her mother, Kia Proctor, spoke about the challenges that arose from his actions. The couple’s relationship ended in 2019 following Newton’s infidelity, which led to the birth of another child with La Reina Shaw.
During the show, he expressed the emotional turmoil surrounding his relationship with Shakira, stating, “I was in a long-term relationship, and I had a child outside of my relationship.” He described the juxtaposition of appearing to have a perfect family life while grappling with personal failings that have affected his daughter. “It’s really been tough on our relationship. All she kept asking was, ‘Yo, why?’” he shared.
Newton acknowledged the long-lasting consequences of his decisions, explaining that he continues to cope with feelings of resentment and guilt. “The vulnerableness was having a child outside the relationship,” he said. Despite the difficulty of the situation, he emphasized the need for accountability, recognizing that his actions have caused disappointment. “I think it’s important for me to be accountable,” he remarked, underscoring the ongoing challenges of his relationship with Shakira who may view him as the man who “cheated on mom.”
Despite these strains, Newton expressed his desire for his children to know he deeply cares for them. He has four children with Proctor and is a father figure to Shaw’s son, Jaden, while also sharing a son with his current girlfriend, Jasmin Brown.
This season on Special Forces, Newton further discussed the emotional and financial implications of leaving the NFL in 2021. He reflected on the sudden shift in lifestyle, noting that his previous financial stability has diminished over time. “It hurts me knowing that I can’t provide like I once did,” he explained. With eight children to support, the transition from the NFL spotlight to a more normalized state of life has been sobering.
Newton concluded by recognizing the journey ahead. “There’s a famous quote that says, ‘In order to get something that you’ve never had, you’ve got to do something that you’ve never done.’” At the age of 35, he is determined to embrace this new chapter and learn from past mistakes, aiming to be a better father moving forward.
