Cameron Diaz Reflects on the Impact of #MeToo in Hollywood
Cameron Diaz has shared her thoughts on the transformative effects of the #MeToo movement within the film industry, emphasizing that it has effectively eradicated the presence of individuals who routinely made colleagues feel uneasy on movie sets.
In a recent discussion on the SkipIntro podcast, Diaz articulated her experience of enduring persistent layers of inappropriate behavior that were once commonplace on set. “There were always layers and layers of inappropriateness that you just kind of had to put up with,” she recalled.
The atmosphere during the filming of her latest project, “Back in Action,” marked a stark contrast to her past experiences. Diaz noted that an HR representative informed her about an anonymous hotline available for reporting any incidents of misconduct, highlighting a significant shift in workplace culture. “I was like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing’. The level of security and safety you feel as a woman now on set is great. I had never felt that before this film,” she expressed.
This film is particularly noteworthy as it represents Diaz’s return to acting after a decade-long hiatus. During this time, she focused on motherhood, sharing her life with husband Benji Madden and their two children, Raddiz and Cardinal, while also developing her own wine brand. Diaz admitted that she had not planned to return to acting at all. “I was perfectly happy, you know, just living my life, doing other things, you know? Like day in and day out, not movies,” she shared with Netflix last year.
However, a call from her former co-star Jamie Foxx, whom she had collaborated with in 2014, changed her mind. “If there’s anyone I’m gonna go back and spend months on end on set having a ball laughing with it would be Jamie,” Diaz explained, indicating the strong bond they share.
