The Expansive Role of Campus Activities in Higher Education

The domain of Campus Activities transcends merely hosting concerts and planning social events; it encompasses vital functions related to leadership development and fostering professional growth. This month, we had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Sandra Rouse from the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA), who illuminated the multifaceted responsibilities of campus activities and offered valuable insights on empowering student development. Dr. Rouse discussed her association’s initiatives aimed at enhancing student expertise, shared tips for navigating interviews, and encouraged openness to new opportunities within higher education.

For further engagement, we encourage readers to join the conversation in our LinkedIn group or to follow HigherEd Careers on Twitter.

Understanding the Mission of NACA

Andrew Hibel from HigherEdJobs inquired about Dr. Rouse’s current role as the Director of Education and Research at NACA. Dr. Rouse explained that her responsibilities include designing educational programs, conducting research in higher education, assisting in strategic planning, and fostering collaborations with various educational organizations and institutions.

Hibel drew attention to NACA’s mission statement, which emphasizes the organization’s commitment to enriching campus activities in the realm of higher education. Dr. Rouse elaborated on NACA’s influence within this sphere through extensive partnerships. These collaborations include ongoing dialogues with other higher education management associations, joint initiatives such as the Student Organizations Institute, and the National Leadership Symposium. Additionally, NACA works on leadership development and offers scholarships to support student growth.

Upcoming Opportunities at the NACA Annual Convention

With the NACA Annual Convention approaching in February, Hibel asked Dr. Rouse about key topics that attendees can expect to explore. She highlighted subjects like developing learning outcomes, effective branding and marketing, risk assessment strategies, leadership skill-building, and effective engagement techniques on campuses. Notably, the convention will feature esteemed speakers, including Dr. Peter Lake, Dr. Jeanna Mastrodicasa, Dr. Kristen Renn, and a keynote address by actress Raven-Symone.

Enhancing Leadership Skills in Students

Andrew Hibel noted that NACA organizes various institutes, such as the Huge Leadership Weekend, which focuses on crucial areas like citizenship, organization development, and ethics. When asked if she perceives a deficiency in these skills among today’s college students, Dr. Rouse clarified that while these competencies may need refinement, they are foundational for developing responsible citizens and effective employees.

On the topic of how Campus Activities can further promote these skills, Dr. Rouse emphasized the value of providing hands-on experiences. She remarked that by participating in campus activities, students cultivate essential leadership skills that benefit them long after graduation.

Preparation for Job Placement

NACA collaborates with several higher education organizations to facilitate job placement through The Placement Exchange (TPE). Highlighting the upcoming TPE conference in March, Dr. Rouse offered insights into preparing for interviewing events. She advised candidates to thoroughly research their desired institutions and come equipped with meaningful questions for interviewers. Emphasizing the importance of wellness, she also recommended that candidates rest adequately to ensure they can perform at their best during intense interview sessions.

After the interview process, Dr. Rouse suggested that candidates distinguish themselves by sending handwritten thank-you notes, a personal touch that can set them apart in a digital age. She also encouraged candidates to maintain a positive outlook, celebrate the accomplishments of their peers, and continue applying even amid setbacks.

Exploring Diverse Opportunities in Student Affairs

Regarding the diverse student affairs positions beyond residential life, Dr. Rouse urged candidates to remain open to various career paths. She pointed out the transferability of skills acquired in residential life to other areas within student affairs, stating that candidates may discover rewarding opportunities that align with their interests.

Understanding Team Dynamics

Shifting focus to the employer’s perspective, Hibel asked how employers might assess a candidate’s teamwork orientation. Dr. Rouse suggested that employers look for specific roles in a candidate’s resume that demonstrate collaborative experiences. She recommended follow-up questions about the dynamics of these group settings and the challenges faced therein.

Insights from the Higher Education Sector

Reflecting on her background in student affairs, Dr. Rouse shared that working at a higher education association allows her to engage with a broader audience than a single campus environment. Her current role is characterized by nationwide and global communication, often conducted through virtual meetings, setting it apart from the dynamic atmosphere found on college campuses.

In conclusion, Dr. Rouse expressed what she finds most fulfilling about working in campus activities—the opportunity to connect with diverse individuals and witness the growth of students. This engagement with vibrant energy and enthusiasm from others remains a significant reward in her career.
