Canada is among several countries that have recently issued travel advisories regarding travel to the United States. With the Trump administration tightening immigration measures, travelers from abroad are being alerted to the potential risks they might face when attempting to enter the country.
On Friday evening, the Canadian government revised its travel advice for individuals considering a trip to the U.S. The update specified that visitors intending to remain in the country for more than 30 days need to register with U.S. authorities.
The advisory stated, “Failure to comply with the registration requirement could result in penalties, fines, and misdemeanor prosecution,” and encouraged individuals to visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website for further registration details.
This advisory aligns with similar warnings issued by various European nations. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, and Finland have also cautioned their citizens about traveling to the U.S.
Although these advisories do not constitute outright travel bans, they are highlighted amid reports of foreign nationals facing detention and deportation by U.S. officials. One notable case involves Canadian citizen Jasmine Mooney, who recently described her experience of being detained at the U.S.-Mexico border when applying for a visa. Mooney expressed her distress, stating she felt as though she had been “kidnapped” during the ordeal.
“One moment, I was in an immigration office discussing my work visa, and then the next, I was instructed to put my hands against the wall and was patted down like a criminal before being taken to an ICE detention center without the opportunity to speak to a lawyer,” Mooney, an entrepreneur from Vancouver, recounted in an article for the Guardian.
Following the Canadian government’s update on travel advice to the U.S., social media users expressed a desire for further action from officials.
“We need to have a travel warning issued. The USA is no longer safe for Canadians,” one user on X platform remarked.
Another user added, “Now do a travel warning. The U.S. is routinely violating international law, and depriving non-citizens of their rights.”
One comment noted, “Canadians are way ahead in realizing this, but it’s good to see the federal government acknowledging that the United States under the Musk-Trump regime is a hostile country.”
