Canada’s ambassador to the United States has announced that Prime Minister Mark Carney is eager to initiate discussions with President Donald Trump at the earliest opportunity.
In a recent interview aired on Fox News, Ambassador Kirsten Hillman indicated that since Carney assumed office on Friday, Canadian officials have been proactive in reaching out to their U.S. counterparts and are optimistic about establishing communication with Trump.
Hillman emphasized Carney’s intent to build a robust and constructive relationship with the U.S. president, acknowledging her belief in the significance of Trump’s efforts to bolster the American economy while expressing similar aspirations for Canada.
When asked about potential strategies Canada could employ to mitigate the reciprocal tariffs that Trump is poised to apply to certain nations, Hillman refrained from offering a direct response. She highlighted discussions held last week with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, clarifying that Canada will indeed be impacted starting April 2.
As trade relations remain a pressing issue, Prime Minister Carney is embarking on his inaugural foreign trip today, which will take him to France and the United Kingdom. During this visit, he is expected to engage in dialogues centered on security as well as economic and trade partnerships, before concluding his trip in Iqaluit, Northwest Territories, to reaffirm Canada’s claims to Arctic sovereignty.
While Carney’s agenda does not currently include a visit to the United States, he has conveyed a desire to connect with Trump when the timing is right.
