Bruno Surace (26-0-2, with five knockouts) is a rising star from France and now faces Jaime Munguia in a rematch after Surace’s surprising knockout victory in their initial bout last December. Surace, initially a significant underdog, is again labeled as an underdog in the upcoming fight, with odds of +500 against Munguia’s -950.
Surace’s win was recognized as ESPN’s boxing Upset of the Year.
Jaime Munguia (44-2, with 35 knockouts), who faced Surace in Mexico, has been a top contender and was ranked No. 3 at 168 pounds prior to that loss. His earlier defeat came against Canelo Alvarez in May 2024, where he lost by unanimous decision. Recent rumors regarding Alvarez stirred media interest. Reports from The Ring indicated that an agreement was being formed for Alvarez to face Terence Crawford, but those prospects quickly shifted when ESPN announced a finalized deal for Alvarez to meet Jake Paul on May 3. Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, was reportedly retracting efforts to finalize the Alvarez vs. Crawford negotiations.
Ultimately, Alvarez secured a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season and confirmed that he would face William Scull for the undisputed super middleweight title.
Alvarez previously held the undisputed title before the IBF stripped him of the belt in July 2024 for not fulfilling a mandatory defense against Scull. Scull (23-0, with nine knockouts) won the vacant IBF title in a decision victory over Vladimir Shishkin in October.
Currently, Alvarez (62-2-2, with 39 knockouts) is looking to build on his recent decision victory over Edgar Berlanga, where he successfully defended his WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.
