Canon Introduces New Live Streaming App for Mobile Devices

Canon has unveiled a new mobile application designed for live streaming that allows users to wirelessly connect and switch between video feeds from three mobile devices. Currently, the app supports only iPhones and iPads running iOS 16 or higher, with no plans for Android compatibility at this stage. Interestingly, the Live Switcher Mobile app does not yet work with any of Canon’s digital cameras, although the company has indicated that this functionality will be added in the future.

The app is now available for download at no cost but comes with certain limitations. Users can stream video at a maximum resolution of 720p, while the output includes a watermark, and advertisements may appear on the interface—though viewers won’t see these ads. For a monthly fee of $17.99, or over $215 annually, users can upgrade to 1080p streaming quality, remove the watermark, and eliminate ads. However, the application does not currently support streaming at resolutions higher than HD.

Within the app, one device acts as the host, providing the interface for switching between feeds while also serving as the primary camera. Up to two other devices can be linked, which can either capture video from different angles or stream a live screen capture, such as gameplay from a video game.

Users have the flexibility to switch between video feeds manually, or they can set the app to automatically switch sources at intervals ranging from eight to 20 seconds. Additionally, the application allows for multiple video streams to be displayed simultaneously using a picture-in-picture effect, and offers options for adding text and image overlays to enhance the livestream with personalization, branding, or captions.

According to Canon, the app supports live streaming to platforms like YouTube and Facebook, along with others that utilize RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol). However, the comment display function is currently limited to YouTube and Facebook.

While its feature set may not compare as comprehensively to the free OBS Studio, which also enables mobile devices to be utilized as video sources, Canon’s Live Switcher Mobile could serve as a more user-friendly option for new influencers venturing into live streaming.

The availability of the app is currently focused on mobile devices, but Canon has committed to enabling connections with its digital cameras in the future. Should this capability be added, along with a potential upgrade to 4K streaming, the app may become a more compelling option for those seeking a versatile and portable streaming solution.
