Rosie Duffield Calls for Apology from Prime Minister

The independent MP for Canterbury, Rosie Duffield, recently expressed her desire for an apology from Prime Minister Keir Starmer, following her departure from the Labour Party. Ms. Duffield, who claims she was “hounded” out due to her views on gender issues, has found herself at odds with the party leadership on several fronts, particularly regarding women-only spaces.

On April 16, the Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, a verdict that has received support from Sir Keir Starmer. In an interview with BBC Radio Kent, Ms. Duffield articulated her feelings about the treatment she received during her time with the party, stating, “I would like an apology for all of the members of the Labour Party who’ve been investigated, blocked, barred from being candidates.” She emphasized the need for accountability for those who have faced similar challenges, many of whom remain unnamed and have suffered job losses within government and the NHS for voicing their opinions on biological sex—a topic protected by law.

When pressed about the likelihood of receiving an apology, Ms. Duffield remarked, “It would be nice, but he’s not going to, that’s just not his style.”

Since leaving the Labour Party in September 2024—shortly after being re-elected—Ms. Duffield has served as an independent representative. She has made it clear that while her core values align with those of the Labour Party, she cannot foresee a return to the party under the current leadership of Sir Keir Starmer. “I can’t imagine being able to do that under Keir Starmer’s leadership, if I’m honest,” she admitted.

In the wake of Ms. Duffield’s statements, Downing Street has refrained from officially addressing her claims. Instead, they highlighted Sir Keir’s supportive comments regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling, which he described as providing “much-needed clarity for drawing up guidance.” A spokesperson reiterated the court’s message: “A woman is an adult female, the court has made that absolutely clear.”
