Police Investigate Alleged Break-In Involving Former Aide of Trump’s Labor Secretary Nominee

Authorities are currently investigating a reported break-in at the Cannon House Office Building, linked to a former aide of Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who has been nominated by former President Donald Trump to be the Secretary of Labor. The incident occurred on Tuesday, and the U.S. Capitol Police are actively searching for the former aide, whose identity remains undisclosed.

The aide, who had previously worked for Chavez-DeRemer during her tenure in the House of Representatives, is believed to have unlawfully entered the congressional office building through a locked door around 4 p.m. According to law enforcement sources, the suspect was found to still possess a parking pass for the facility. Investigators have retrieved surveillance footage to identify the individual.

Reports indicate that Capitol Police officers have been showing a video image of a man with a beard, wearing a hoodie, to various congressional aides as they exited the Cannon garage to ascertain if they recognized him.

Chavez-DeRemer, who is the daughter of a Teamsters union member, departed from her House seat in January following her nomination to lead the Department of Labor. Trump had publicly praised her commitment to the workforce, stating she had been dedicated to collaborating with both business and labor sectors to better support American workers.

“Lori has worked tirelessly with both Business and Labor to build America’s workforce, and support the hardworking men and women of America,” Trump expressed on his Truth Social account at the time of her nomination. He conveyed optimism regarding their partnership aimed at enhancing opportunities, growing wages, and revitalizing manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

Chavez-DeRemer, who served one term as a Republican representative, faced defeat in her re-election campaign last November against Democrat Janelle Bynum. She is slated to testify before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) on Wednesday regarding her nomination.

As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this incident may impact Chavez-DeRemer’s confirmation process and her plans as a prospective labor secretary.
