Berlin — A car plowed into a crowd in central Munich on Thursday, resulting in injuries to nearly 30 individuals, including children, according to official reports. Authorities identified the driver as a 24-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker, and they confirmed that at least two of the injured sustained serious injuries.
Bavarian governor Markus Söder characterized the incident, which occurred around 10:30 a.m. in a central square, as a “suspected attack.” Police indicated on the social media platform X that the driver was “secured” at the scene, eliminating any further threat to the public. Images from the scene showed a damaged Mini Cooper and scattered debris, including personal belongings such as shoes, with a man visibly taken into custody.
Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his profound shock regarding the event, particularly highlighting that children were among those hurt. At the time of the incident, a demonstration organized by the service workers’ union ver.di was occurring in the vicinity. It remains unclear if any demonstrators were among those injured.
In the wake of this incident, Munich is expecting increased security measures in the coming days, coinciding with the start of the three-day Munich Security Conference, a prominent annual assembly focused on international foreign and security policy.
This occurrence follows closely behind a tragic incident in December, when a man drove a truck into at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, resulting in five fatalities and over 200 injuries. In response, the German government noted that preventing such incidents is challenging, especially when mental health issues may be involved with the perpetrator.
