Carnegie Deli Set to Bring Iconic Pastrami and Corned Beef to Costco
While the concept of paradise may be subjective, many would agree that a hearty sandwich filled with thick-cut, smoked pastrami on homemade rye comes quite close.
In an exciting development, the renowned Carnegie Deli in New York City is making its legendary meats available at Costco locations starting early March. The establishment has unveiled a Pastrami and Corned Beef Combo Pack, providing a glimpse into its nearly 90-year culinary history.
Sarri Harper, CEO of Carnegie Deli Group, expressed to Food & Wine the significance of the deli, stating, “Carnegie Deli stands as a New York institution, embodying the rich traditions of the city’s Jewish deli culture since its inception in 1937. We aim for Costco shoppers to savor a piece of this legacy with every bite they take.”
Established in 1937, the deli was co-founded by Leo Steiner and Milton Parker, originally situated near Carnegie Hall. For many years, it served both locals and Hollywood stars, gaining broader acclaim after a notable review in the New York Times in 1979, as noted by NPR. Over the decades, it became a staple stop for tourists, celebrated for its nostalgic ambiance and towering pastrami sandwiches.
The new combo pack will reach 50 Costco stores across the Northeast next month, including locations in Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. There are plans for expanded distribution in the upcoming months, so if your nearby Costco isn’t part of the initial launch, more opportunities will follow.
Although the original Carnegie Deli closed its doors in 2016, the brand has continued to thrive through a Madison Square Garden venue and an online retail site. Before its closure, the Midtown gem was a gathering place for locals, tourists, and celebrities, showcased by its impressive wall of photographs featuring famous visitors.
This marks the first occasion Carnegie Deli has offered its Pastrami and Corned Beef combo pack in grocery stores, making these signature cuts accessible at Costco. The package features two 12-ounce portions, perfect for recreating the deli’s famously substantial sandwiches at home, all priced at just under $18.
As explained by Harper, the deli employs a distinctive blend of spices and adheres to traditional family recipes for its pastrami and corned beef. The pastrami is brined, seasoned, and smoked, while the corned beef undergoes a meticulous curing and simmering process to achieve optimal tenderness. Customers can expect the same quality in the Costco offerings.
Harper emphasized, “We are excited to bring an authentic New York deli experience to our Costco customers, ensuring that our pastrami and corned beef reflect the same quality and dedication found in all our sandwiches.”
This exciting launch is certainly a reason to celebrate!
