Carnegie Clean Energy Embarks on CETO Deployment at BiMEP
Carnegie Clean Energy has made significant strides in advancing its CETO wave energy technology through a new contract with the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP). This agreement, part of the ACHIEVE program, enables the installation and testing of CETO at BiMEP’s designated site.
The recent contract builds on a previously established Berth Reservation Agreement, detailing the procedures for the installation, operation, and eventual decommissioning of the CETO system over the next two years. BiMEP is set to provide essential marine infrastructure, including berth mooring systems, submarine power and fiber optic cables, alongside terrestrial facilities such as an electrical substation, power lines, and office space. These resources are crucial for the deployment of CETO and for ensuring its integration into the energy grid.
In the upcoming months, BiMEP will focus on upgrading its facilities, which entails removing outdated equipment and replacing the existing electrical connector at the CETO site. Following the completion of these upgrades, Carnegie and its subsidiaries will gain access to the area to commence their operations.
The contract also emphasizes BiMEP’s commitment to supporting the collaboration required under the RENMARINAS DEMOS program. This includes sharing knowledge, wave data, and conducting environmental assessments to enhance the overall project efficacy.
The deployment of CETO under the ACHIEVE initiative is a vital milestone in commercializing this innovative technology. Jonathan Fiévez, CEO of Carnegie, has expressed confidence in the decision to deploy CETO at BiMEP, citing its world-class facilities and the challenging marine conditions that will test the system’s capabilities. Fiévez stated, “This combination is precisely why we’ve chosen to deploy CETO at BiMEP and we look forward to CETO demonstrating its performance and reliability at the site.”
Project Manager Miguel Santos-Herran echoed this enthusiasm, highlighting the continued commitment to working in the Basque region. With the establishment of their offices nearby, the team is eager to advance to subsequent phases, which include installing wave buoys, conducting site preparations, and ultimately launching the CETO deployment.
Carnegie Clean Energy also acknowledged the financial support received for the ACHIEVE program through various initiatives, including the EuropeWave PCP program, the RENMARINAS DEMOS program, and support from the Ente Vasco de la Energia (EVE), the Basque Energy Agency.
