KIMBERLY AKIMBO National Tour Set to Launch in Denver

The much-anticipated KIMBERLY AKIMBO tour recently conducted its sitzprobe, gearing up for its official opening in Denver this month. Audience members can look forward to witnessing a performance that includes a special rendition of the song “Now,” featuring three-time Tony Award nominee Carolee Carmello as Kimberly alongside Miguel Gil, who portrays Seth.

This exceptional production boasts a talented cast, including Jim Hogan and Darron Hayes, both of whom are part of the Original Broadway Company of KIMBERLY AKIMBO. Other cast members include Emily Koch (known for roles in Wicked and Waitress), Dana Steingold (Beetlejuice, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Grace Capeless (Disney’s The Lion King), and Skye Alyssa Friedman, among others. The understudy team features Sarah Lynn Marion, Regene Seven Odon, Marcus Phillips, Bailey Ryon, and Brandon Springman, with Valerie Wright serving as the standby for Kimberly.

KIMBERLY AKIMBO, which secured five Tony Awards in 2023, including the prestigious title of BEST MUSICAL, has been recognized as one of the season’s standout productions. The story follows Kimberly, who is approaching her 16th birthday and navigating her family’s move to a new suburban town in New Jersey. Described by The New Yorker as a “howlingly funny heartbreaker of a show,” Kimberly grapples with family challenges, a rare genetic disorder, her first crush, and even potential felony charges as she steadfastly seeks happiness and adventure amidst adversity.

As previously confirmed, KIMBERLY AKIMBO will kick off its National Tour at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on September 22. The countdown to this premiere includes technical rehearsals and previews scheduled at The Stanley Theatre in Utica, before embarking on an extensive 80-week tour across more than 60 cities in North America.

The production has garnered accolades as BEST MUSICAL from numerous esteemed organizations, including the Tony Awards and the New York Drama Critics Circle. Its collection of honors extends to four additional Tony Awards, notably for Best Score by David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori, Best Book by Lindsay-Abaire, and performances by both a leading actress and a featured actress in a musical. Notably, Jeanine Tesori made history by being the first female composer to win two Tony Awards for Best Score with her contribution to KIMBERLY AKIMBO.

The creative team behind KIMBERLY AKIMBO includes scenic design by Tony Award winner David Zinn, with Sarah Laux handling costume design. Lighting by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew and sound design by Tony Award winner Kai Harada complement the production’s vision, while projections are designed by Lucy MacKinnon. Other key contributors include music supervisor Chris Fenwick and music director Leigh Delano, with orchestrations provided by John Clancy and Macy Schmidt. The production management team includes Production Supervisor Arabella Powell and Production Stage Manager Shawn Pennington, with casting managed by The Telsey Office and Craig Burns, CSA.

KIMBERLY AKIMBO is produced by a collaboration of notable figures and organizations, including David Stone, The Atlantic Theater Company, James L. Nederlander, LaChanze, John Gore, Patrick Catullo, and Aaron Glick.

The show initially premiered on Broadway on November 10, 2022, receiving enthusiastic critical acclaim after its world premiere at the Atlantic Theater Company in November 2021. Over its Broadway run, KIMBERLY AKIMBO delivered 32 previews and a total of 612 performances.
