Carrie Coon Reflects on Her Role in The White Lotus Finale and the Buzz Surrounding It
Shortly after delivering a poignant monologue as Laurie during a pivotal dinner scene with Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) in the season finale of The White Lotus on April 6, Carrie Coon found herself at the center of significant awards speculation. Nevertheless, Coon shared that she hasn’t yet absorbed the magnitude of the Emmy discussions. “My in-laws are here from Singapore. I’m taking my children to school. I’m going to the grocery store. My life has not changed at all,” she remarked.
Despite the whirlwind of attention, Coon expressed gratitude for the impactful response to the Mike White-created series. “What the internet tells us is that people watched the show and that it was provocative and meaningful for them,” she noted. Her character’s memorable declaration—“I don’t need religion or God to give my life meaning because time gives it meaning”—highlights the central theme of female connections in her life.
Coon credits her co-stars Bibb and Monaghan for the authenticity of the emotional scene, emphasizing that the truthfulness of their performances came from their shared experiences over the filming period. “When you’re working with actors of their experience, you are just speaking into their listening. There is no speech without those women,” she commented.
Aside from the acclaim surrounding the dinner scene, Coon has garnered attention for her portrayal in a tense moment later in the episode marked by gunshots, prompting her character’s sudden flight from danger. Many fans have noted that her monologue encapsulates the season’s best moments, with some remarks humorously transformed into memes.
“I think that’s hysterical it’s become a meme,” Coon said, playfully attributing some of her success to her high school track coach, Tom Snell, from Copley High School in Ohio. She fondly reflected, “I learned so much from Coach Snell. I was really proud of our team. It was a great time in my life,” humorously adding that she hopes her action-packed moments will lead to future casting opportunities in action series.
Coon expressed her enjoyment in filming physical scenes, such as the one where her character jumps out of a window after spending the night at Aleksei’s (Julian Kostov) apartment. “As a woman, I always get excited when I get to do something physical, like a stunt,” she said. The scene was initially intended to involve a fire escape but evolved into a test of her strength and endurance, which she found appealing.
While the buzz around The White Lotus reached its peak recently, for Coon, the production in Thailand feels like a distant memory, especially as she has since completed filming an entire season of The Gilded Age, where she portrays Bertha Russell.
Coon mentioned that despite their individual pursuits post-production, she maintains close contact with her co-stars Monaghan and Bibb. “Leslie, Michelle, and I have a text thread called ‘the ladies,’ and we always check in with each other. We were just texting this morning about the aftermath,” she shared with a smile, continuing, “We will continue to see each other, but what happens in Thailand stays in Thailand!”
