Carrie Underwood Reflects on Tough Cuts and Life Changes After “American Idol” Live Show
After the first live show of the season on “American Idol,” where the Top 20 contestants were narrowed down to 14, Carrie Underwood shared her thoughts with “Extra’s” Terri Seymour. The judges were tasked with making the final four selections, and Underwood described the experience as “huge” and emotionally challenging.
“It was a huge cut tonight and it was on us to save people. That’s the problem when you have so much talent… There are certainly going to be hopefuls that we’re all going to miss, and I will see them in my dreams forever. I will carry guilt with me for the rest of my life,” Underwood expressed, highlighting the emotional stakes involved in the competition.
A former winner of Season 4 of “American Idol,” Underwood made a noteworthy return to the show’s stage on Easter Sunday, delivering a performance of “How Great Thou Art.”
Terri Seymour noted the public’s sentiment, saying, “People are just saying, ‘Can we just crown Carrie the winner again?’” In response, Underwood revealed, “I actually have dreams… often where I’m trying out for ‘American Idol’ again even though I won once. I know that I won, and it’s like, ‘Do I want to try out again? Do I think I can win again, or what if I lose this time?’ So, no, I don’t want to do that, but it was a great night.”
Moreover, Underwood reflected on the emotional farewell of her Vegas residency, marking a significant moment in her career. “It was so bittersweet,” she stated. “I compared it to graduation. You know it’s coming and you’re excited for whatever lies ahead, but closing a chapter of your life like that is a big deal.”
In a broader discussion, Terri also engaged with Underwood’s fellow “Idol” judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Lionel commended Underwood’s natural abilities as a judge, stating she is “grounded” as a mother and possesses exceptional vocal talents. He also shared a touching memory of meeting Pope Francis, expressing that the late Pope was “in touch with the common person,” and recounted a recent encounter with soccer legend Lionel Messi, who was named after him.
Luke Bryan touched on the competition cuts and confirmed that he’s been in contact with former judge Katy Perry, sharing that he is relieved she returned safely from her recent journey to space.
“American Idol” continues to air on Sundays and Mondays on ABC, bringing audiences the evolving journeys of aspiring artists in the music industry.
