Carrie Underwood’s Performance at Trump’s Inauguration: A Mix of Challenges and Moments of Unity
Carrie Underwood faced significant technical challenges during her performance of “America the Beautiful” at Donald Trump’s inauguration held in Washington, D.C., on January 20. Initially, her performance was delayed due to issues with the music setup, prompting her to begin singing a cappella to the gathered audience.
“I can just sing it,” Underwood was seen communicating to an official before taking to the microphone and encouraging the crowd, “You know the words.” This spontaneous approach led to several notable figures, including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, joining her in song.
Despite receiving criticism for agreeing to perform at an inauguration fraught with controversy, Underwood’s ability to maintain her composure amidst the technical difficulties earned her a wave of praise. Many viewers described her performance as “incredible,” commending the singer for executing it “perfectly” under pressure.

After her emotional performance concluded with a powerful final note, Underwood greeted several prominent figures, including Biden, Trump, and vice president J.D. Vance. However, her decision to not extend a handshake to Kamala Harris did not go unnoticed by social media users, sparking discussions online.

Underwood was announced as a performer on January 13, just days before the inauguration. She expressed her feelings about participating in the event, stating, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Historically, Underwood has opted to remain neutral regarding her political beliefs. In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, she remarked, “I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.”
