Carrie Underwood’s Performance at Presidential Inauguration
During President Donald Trump’s inauguration, country music star Carrie Underwood showcased her professionalism in the face of unexpected technical difficulties.
Initially set to perform “America the Beautiful” alongside the Armed Forces Chorus, Underwood encountered an audio malfunction that rendered her backing virtually silent. In response, she ingeniously adapted her approach, choosing to sing the song a capella. Addressing the audience—which included notable figures such as former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and tech giants like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos—she encouraged them to join in, saying, “You know the words, help me out here.”
Prior to the inauguration, Underwood expressed her excitement about participating in the event. Reflecting on the honor, she stated, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Underwood’s choice to perform stirred up debate, receiving mixed reactions from audiences and critics alike. Notably, “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg voiced her support for Underwood, asserting, “I stand behind her. If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform someplace, I believe they have the same right.” This highlights the ongoing discourse regarding artists’ responsibilities and choices in politically charged environments.
Throughout her career, Underwood has maintained a relatively private stance on her political views. In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, she remarked on the complexities of political opinions, stating, “Nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black-and-white. And it’s not like that.”
