Carrie Underwood, best known for her chart-topping country hits like “Before He Cheats” and “All-American Girl,” has revealed an unexpected passion for nu-metal music.
During a memorable segment from season 23 of American Idol, Underwood filled in for Katy Perry on the judging panel alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. A talented 18-year-old contestant named Insite captured attention by performing “Freak On a Leash” by Korn, which delighted Underwood.

“You’ve got the hair for it,” Underwood enthusiastically remarked to Insite. As he passionately sang and headbanged to the song, Underwood joined in, clearly enjoying the moment and surprising her fellow judges. “She knew every word! Who are you?” Richie exclaimed, impressed by her knowledge of the track.
When the panel requested a softer performance, Insite chose to perform “Bodies” by Drowning Pool.
“Looks like we’re learning about Carrie’s hidden sides,” Bryan commented as Underwood danced and sang along with Insite, even motivating Bryan to join in the headbanging.
“That was my high school experience,” Underwood shared, revealing her own background with the genre. “I’ve even crowd surfed, people,” she added with a laugh.
Insite ultimately garnered unanimous approval from the judges, propelling him forward in the competition. For those interested, the full audition is available for viewing. American Idol airs on Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with episodes ready for streaming on Hulu the following day.
