Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Remove Episodes Following Plane Crashes
The animated cable channel Cartoon Network, along with its adult-oriented programming block Adult Swim, has decided to remove several episodes from rerun schedules in light of recent tragic plane crashes in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
According to reports from the X account CN News/Schedules, a list of episode titles has been identified for removal, which include The Amazing World of Gumball’s “The Saint,” Courage The Cowardly Dog’s “Scuba-Scuba Doo,” Family Guy’s “Boy (Dog) Meets Girl (Dog)” and “Yug Ylimaf,” along with Robot Chicken’s “Happy Russian Deathdog Dolloween 2 U” and The Eric Andre Show’s “Hannibal Quits.” These episodes are being pulled for the next two weeks due to their content, which either includes direct references to or jokes about airplane incidents.
In-depth details about the removed episodes reveal sensitive subject matter. Notably, episodes like “The Saint,” “Yug Ylimaf,” and “Scuba-Scuba Dog” involve aviation mishaps, while “Boy (Dog) Meets Girl (Dog)” features a joke related to the September 11 attacks. Additionally, “Happy Russian Deathdog Dolloween 2 U” includes a nod to the famous film Donnie Darko, which also features a plane crash, and “Hannibal Quits” showcases a comedic sketch in which Eric André pretends to fall from an aircraft.
This is not the first instance where Adult Swim has felt compelled to amend its programming following real-world tragedies. In 2013, the network extended apologies to Oklahoma viewers after airing a Family Guy episode that depicted a tornado on the same day a devastating tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma. The programming block acknowledged the insensitivity, clarifying that the episode had been scheduled weeks prior to the disaster.
The programming changes by Cartoon Network and Adult Swim occur in the wake of significant incidents earlier this week, including a tragic collision involving a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger plane in Washington D.C., which resulted in the deaths of 67 individuals. Additionally, a medical transport plane crash in Philadelphia claimed seven lives and left at least 19 individuals injured. Investigations are ongoing in both cases to determine the causes of these catastrophic events, the details of which remain to be fully understood.
