Cary, North Carolina, topped GoBankingRates’ recent ranking of the best cities for retirees, noted for its favorable weather and affordability. The city, situated just nine miles from Raleigh, experiences temperatures ranging from 32°F to 89°F throughout the year. Monthly living expenses in Cary average around $3,615. Additionally, other cities recognized for their combination of affordability and pleasant climate include Metairie, Louisiana; Perry Hall, Maryland; Laughlin, Nevada; and Oro Valley, Arizona.
While Florida remains a favorite among retirees, its high cost of living can surpass $60,000 annually, partly due to expensive housing. This factor may lead some seniors to reconsider their retirement plans. However, many other warm and welcoming locations offer attractive alternatives for those seeking a sunny lifestyle without breaking the bank.
In 2024, GoBankingRates analyzed various U.S. cities based on criteria such as overall livability, average rent, weather conditions, and cost of living to identify 12 cities that would be ideal for retirees. Cary stood out prominently in the rankings, achieving the highest livability score on the list.
According to GoBankingRates, “The Southern region of the U.S. is often characterized by its heat and humidity, and Cary experiences its share of these extremes, particularly a muggy season from late May through early October.” Nevertheless, the temperature remains manageable within the range of 32°F to 89°F year-round. The report indicated Cary boasts a livability score of 90 out of 100, with monthly expenses approximated at $3,615. Notably, 12 percent of the population is aged 65 and above, fostering a robust community of retirees.
In addition to its climate, AreaVibes presented high ratings for Cary based on factors such as amenities, safety, health services, housing quality, educational institutions, and employment opportunities, with all attaining an A+ rating. While local residents provided a slightly lower but still commendable B rating overall, the cost of living received a D, which did not stop Cary from ranking among the top 12 in GoBankingRates’ assessment.
Other cities outside Florida that made this year’s list for their low living costs and favorable weather include Metairie, Louisiana, with a livability score of 84; Perry Hall, Maryland, known for its cooler climate; Laughlin, Nevada, which boasts the lowest estimated monthly living costs; and Oro Valley, Arizona, where over a third of residents are seniors.
