After a lengthy hiatus of over five years, fans of the “One Chicago” franchise are in for a treat with the upcoming crossover event. The last such event aired on October 16, 2019. According to Andrea Newman, the showrunner for Chicago Fire, the delay is due to the intricate planning required to bring these shows together, a process that entails months of preparation before filming begins. This time, however, viewers can expect what Newman describes as “our biggest crossover yet,” featuring a gripping narrative that starts with Chicago Fire, carries through Chicago Med, and concludes with Chicago P.D.
The logistical advantages of having all three shows filming on the same studio lot have significantly contributed to the ease of coordination, notes Allen MacDonald, the showrunner of Chicago Med. “The proximity of the sound stages, all within a ten-minute walk, greatly aids scheduling,” he adds. With excitement building, he assures that fans will be pleased with the unfolding drama.
Gwen Sigan, showrunner for Chicago P.D., teases that viewers can look forward to some surprising character combinations across the three shows. “Our teams achieved remarkable things within tight timelines,” she remarks, highlighting the dedication and skill of the production crews involved in the project.
As an introduction to the suspenseful crossover event slated for January 29, the showrunners shed light on what fans can anticipate.
Chicago Fire
In the dramatic opening sequence, Chicago’s emergency responders band together in response to a catastrophic gas main explosion that devastates a city block. This results in a raging fire, geysers of flames, and the collapse of sidewalks and tunnels beneath the surface, as described by Newman. Key characters, such as paramedics Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Novak (Jocelyn Hudon), collaborate with Dr. Frost (Darren Barnet) from Chicago Med for critical on-site triage. Newman further emphasizes that this disaster puts the lives of their team in jeopardy, with several prominent characters facing severe challenges, including firefighters trapped and couples enduring intense emotional strife.
Chicago Med
MacDonald explains that the Med team will operate on the front lines alongside their counterparts from Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. to navigate the disaster. “Trust and collaboration are essential for minimizing casualties,” he comments. Within this chaotic scene, Dr. Lennox (Sarah Ramos) feels the immense pressure of saving a CPD officer amidst the turmoil. MacDonald also hints at emotional reunions and the formation of new bonds among characters throughout the crossover.
Chicago P.D.
As the storyline progresses, Sigan reveals that the police department quickly realizes the incident involves foul play and takes on the urgent task of investigating. The tension rises as they race against time to locate the culprits and rescue those trapped in the aftermath. “It’s a race against the clock,” Sigan states, establishing an urgent tone for this intense segment of the crossover.
